Your hot tub and pool, designed together β properly, from the start.
A hot tub and pool combo is one of the most ambitious DIY builds you can take on. Youβre not just designing one water feature β youβre designing two, making sure they work together, and making sure the whole thing looks like it was always meant to be there.
The project costs involved are serious. Materials, groundworks, labour, tiling, equipment β youβre typically looking at $20,000β$40,000+ once everything is accounted for.
Getting the design right before a single block is laid or a cubic yard of concrete is poured is the most important investment you can make in the whole project.
Over 1,500 custom builds completed worldwide using this process.
Across the USA, UK, Europe, Australia and beyond.
Why I Do This
When I built my own custom hot tub, the information I needed simply didnβt exist online. I had to work it out myself β through research, trial, and more than a few mistakes along the way.
When I finished, I built buildahottub.com to document everything so others wouldnβt have to go through the same process blind. Hundreds of videos, thousands of words of guides, and a community of builders whoβve now completed their own projects all over the world.
The Combo Design Consultancy is for the most ambitious of those builders β the ones who want both a hot tub and a pool, designed as a single cohesive project, done right.
Why a Combo Build Needs Specialist Design
A hot tub and pool arenβt just two separate builds sitting next to each other. When they share a space, the design decisions interact:
- The hot tub control room position has to work relative to both features
- The plumbing systems are separate but the physical layout needs to accommodate both
- Water features, overflow systems, and visual flow between the two need to be resolved at design stage
- The structural engineering has to account for both structures and their combined load
Getting this resolved on paper β in 3D, with full plumbing layouts β before you start building is the difference between a project that goes smoothly and one that involves expensive redesigns mid-build.
What You Get
This is a comprehensive, end-to-end design service for your hot tub and pool combo. Everything is included:
1. Initial Brief & Sketch Review
You send me a rough sketch covering both features β dimensions, layout, how they sit relative to each other, and your build method (poured concrete or block-built). Iβll review everything and come back with questions and initial thoughts before anything is committed to design.
2. Control Room Planning
The hot tub control room is the most critical element of the whole design. Weβll work out the optimal position relative to both the tub and the pool, whether it should be above or below the waterline, and the exact pump specification based on a proper head height calculation. The pool filtration system is handled separately, and weβll make sure both systems have the space and access they need.
3. Site Assessment
You send me photos and a video walkthrough of your proposed site. Iβll assess drainage, access, any level changes, structural considerations, and how the two features will sit together in the space. Combo builds often have site-specific challenges that are much cheaper to solve on screen than on site.
4. Interactive 3D Model
This is where the whole project comes to life. I build a full 3D model of your hot tub and pool together, and we iterate β via email or WhatsApp β until youβre completely satisfied with how everything looks and functions as a combined design. You sign off before we move on.
5. 3D Plumbing Layout
Once the structure is signed off, I add the full plumbing to the 3D model for both features. Youβll be able to see exactly where every pipe, jet, filter run, and component sits. This is particularly valuable on a combo build where space for pipework is often tighter.
6. Architectural CAD Drawing
The completed design goes to our CAD and structural engineering team, who produce a professional architectural drawing with full dimensions for both structures. This is what your building contractor will work from β clean, dimensioned, and to industry standard.
7. Comprehensive Build Documentation
A 6,000+ word build guide covering everything from sealing concrete to insulation, water chemistry to equipment installation. Refined over years of real-world builds and used to complete literally hundreds of projects. Everything your builder β or you β will need to execute the build correctly.
8. Parts Quotation
A full parts quotation for everything needed to equip your hot tub β pumps, heater, jets, controls, plumbing fittings β all specced correctly for your exact design. No guessing, no overbuying, no missing components.
What Customers Say (Not made up, these all have multiple videos on my YouTube Channel)
βI had no idea where to start. The 3D model was the moment it all clicked β suddenly I could actually see what I was building. Worth every penny.β
β Patrick, Wisconsin (basement hot tub & cold plunge build)
βThe control room planning alone saved me from a really expensive mistake. I had it in the wrong position. Andi spotted it immediately.β
β Richie, Texas
βThe documentation is incredible. I referred back to it constantly throughout the build. Nothing was left unanswered.β
β Mark, Kansas

Frequently Asked Questions
How do we communicate during the process?
Primarily via email, with WhatsApp available for sharing 3D model screenshots and quick back-and-forth on design decisions. You wonβt be waiting days for responses.
Can I add a pool to an existing hot tub design later?
Technically yes, but itβs far better to design both together from the start. Retrofitting a pool to an existing hot tub design often means revisiting the control room position, drainage, and structural elements that were already resolved. The Combo Consultancy exists precisely to avoid that.
What if I change my mind about something during the design?
Thatβs what the 3D modelling stage is for. We iterate until youβre completely happy before anything is finalised. Changes in a 3D model cost nothing. Changes on site cost a lot.
Do I need to know anything about hot tubs or pools before we start?
No. You bring the vision and the site β I bring the technical knowledge. Plenty of the 1,500+ builds completed via this process were by complete first-timers taking on ambitious projects.
What happens after the consultancy β can I get help with parts?
Yes. The parts quotation is included, and once youβre ready to order you can do so directly via parts4tubs.com (USA) or parts4tubs.co.uk (UK). Everything will be specced correctly for your exact build.
How long have you been doing this?
The buildahottub.com website has been running since 2017. Over 1,500 custom builds completed worldwide. This isnβt a side hustle β itβs what I do.
